Jim Whelan Atlantic City Around-the-Island Swim
The Jim Whelan Around-the-Island Swim is a 36.6 km race around Absecon Island, New Jersey (which includes the towns of Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate, and Longport). It is a renewed version, open to amateurs, of the professional Around the Island Swim held intermittently from 1954 to 2005.
In 2020, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, 11 solo swimmers attempted the swim and none finished due to poor tide planning. In 2022, two solo swimmers attempted the swim, and neither finished.
Note: this event requires swimmers to wear tow-floats and enforces a time limit.
